Academic program is directed toward upgrading of critical thinking skills, competencies and standards required for practice of professional nursing and midwifery through problem based learning. Emphasis is given towards capacity building in the domains of clinical nursing, first level management, nursing education and in nursing research.
Clinical training is imparted to the students from first year onwards in both the programs. Practical experience in nursing laboratory/hospital/ community is correlated with theory. It is mandatory for a student to attend the specific clinical field by rotation. To build up strong clinical skills students are placed at various health facilities including our own Central Referral Hospital, Govt. run STNM Hospital, and at Rural & Urban health centres of Sikkim. Short observational visits also arranged for first-hand experience to other special health facilities. There is an university examination at the end of each academic year. After successful completion of the programs, graduates assume responsibilities as professional, competent nurse and midwife in providing promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative services. The graduates take independent decisions in nursing situations & facilitate individuals and groups in maintaining health.
